“It’s an Economic Disaster”
Interview with Kristine and Douglas Tompkins, founders of Esprit and The North Face, now creators of national parks in South America, on the 2015 GES motto “Values to Guide Economies”.
Saving nature or doing business – that’s a common conflict of values business people have to face. First, Kristine and Douglas Tompkins did business, running their clothing companies. Today, they use their wealth to save nature by buying as much land as they can to recover imperiled wildlife and promote healthy local communities. “People talk about the great goodness of economic development over time, but in fact it’s an economic disaster. Not even long-term, but mid-term, too.” The interview was held on the occasion of their presentation with the 2015 Global Economy Prize.
